Revenue stream 1 of 3 · Already live

Expired Domains

$4M–$6M estimated annual sales  ·  70–85% revenue share

Squarespace already monetizes expired domains through Afternic and GoDaddy Auctions. When a domain registered through Squarespace expires and isn't renewed, the program captures that value and shares the revenue with you.

The GoDaddy Auctions advantage

  • GoDaddy brings the largest pool of qualified buyers — not just domain investors, but end users actively searching for names.
  • Rich data enrichment (Semrush backlinks, Estibot valuations, GoDaddy traffic data) makes it easy for buyers to discover and evaluate domains.
  • Targeted email campaigns across 20M+ GoDaddy customers surface expired domains to the most likely buyers.
  • Passive revenue — once integrated, set it and forget it.

Expired Domains · Already live with Squarespace

How our expiry partnership is performing

Over the trailing 12 months the program booked ~$5.0M across 43,000+ domains sold. Volume normalized after the 2025 launch surge — while revenue per expired listing nearly doubled, from $2.21 to a $4.09 peak, as we've optimized demand. Pick up to two stats to compare them on dual axes →

Expired Domains · Why prices land where they do

Surfacing your inventory to 20M+ end users — through every channel we run

End users buy domains to use them and pay meaningfully more than investors who buy to flip. We're constantly experimenting with how to drive more of GoDaddy's 20M+ end-user buyers into your expiry inventory — across every product surface. Here are four examples of this below.

GoDaddy 'Explore endings' carousel surfacing premium expiry domains

Channel 3

Search recommendations

Expiry domains appear in "Explore endings" carousels alongside related searches.

GoDaddy post-purchase confirmation page showing Recommended Domain Auctions

Channel 4

Post-purchase placements

After every domain purchase, customers see Recommended Domain Auctions — expiry inventory matched to what they just bought.

TLDs available for expiry monetization

Afternic monetizes expired domains across 52 extensions. Squarespace already sends most — but the 12 highlighted below aren't in your feed yet. Turning them on is pure incremental revenue.

$6M–$14M estimated annual sales  ·  ~10% revenue share to Squarespace

Integration approach

Phased integration · Start with Fast Transfer

Three inventory tiers, ordered by integration cost. Most partners launch Fast Transfer first — fully API-driven, instant, lightest eng/UX lift — then layer in Standard Transfer and Make Offer.

Phase 1 · Recommended start

Fast Transfer

~10M domains · all priced

10 TLDs today: .com .net .org .info .biz .co .io .xyz .de .pw

Fulfillment
100% API-driven. Seller pre-authorized.
Customer wait
Under 5 minutes typical.
Buy-flow UX
One click → domain in Squarespace. No pending state.
Eng & UX lift
Single API integration. Reuse the standard buy flow.

Best first launch. The 10 enabled TLDs cover the dominant share of premium demand — frictionless for buyers, fully automated for you.

Phase 2

Standard Transfer

~10M domains · all priced

Available across the full 729-TLD catalog.

Fulfillment
API-driven once seller provides auth code.
Customer wait
Hours to a few days — seller-dependent.
Buy-flow UX
Pending state · "we'll email when ready".
Eng & UX lift
Extends Phase 1. Adds order-status tracking.

Add once Phase 1 is steady. Doubles your priced inventory and extends coverage to the full 729-TLD catalog.

Phase 3

Make Offer · Request Price

~4M domains · unpriced

Available across the full 729-TLD catalog.

Fulfillment
Buyer submits offer. Afternic broker negotiates.
Customer wait
Negotiation-dependent.
Buy-flow UX
"Make offer" CTA in place of "Buy now".
Eng & UX lift
New offer-submission flow + status tracking.

Unlocks unpriced inventory across the same 729 TLDs — names where buyers negotiate an offer instead of clicking Buy Now.

Why Squarespace's audience wants this

Better for Squarespace Customers

Squarespace's base is entrepreneurs, creatives, and small businesses building a brand online — the exact people who care most about landing the right domain name.

Discover the right domain

Today, Squarespace customers searching for a domain don't see premium alternatives when their first choice is taken. Afternic's 23M+ listings surface right in the search flow, giving customers the widest possible selection without leaving Squarespace.

Instant delivery with Fast Transfer

Fast Transfer is proprietary Afternic technology that enables instant domain transfer at checkout. Your customer gets their domain and starts building their site immediately. No waiting, no manual steps, no friction.

High-intent customers stay on Squarespace

85% of premium domain buyers go on to purchase additional products — websites, online stores, email. These are exactly the customers Squarespace wants. Right now they're leaving to find domains elsewhere, and taking their full subscription spend with them.

Three optimization levers

Maximizing Your Revenue

Three ways to optimize Afternic Reseller performance and drive more premium domain sales.

1

Exact Match in Search

Optimize the domain search path to surface premium domains as exact match results. When a customer searches for a name that's available as a premium, show it prominently.

Example customer searches lenny.com → if listed as a premium, it appears as the top match.

2

Name Spin Suggestions

Place relevant premium domains within spin results alongside standard suggestions. If a customer searches for a taken domain, premium alternatives appear in the recommendation flow.

Example customer searches lenny.com (taken) → lennynow.com appears as a premium suggestion.

3

Email Marketing

Targeted outreach to existing Squarespace customers when a premium domain relevant to them becomes available.

Example customer owns thebrand.biz → email when thebrand.com is listed for sale.

These three levers directly increase Afternic Reseller sales volume and revenue for Squarespace.

Revenue stream 3 of 3

Domain Broker Service

$2M–$6M estimated annual sales  ·  ~15% blended revenue share to Squarespace

When a Squarespace customer wants a specific domain that isn't actively listed for sale, Domain Broker Service deploys expert brokers to negotiate the acquisition on their behalf. With 150+ sales agents worldwide and over $2 billion in completed brokered transactions, GoDaddy has the widest reach in the industry to connect directly with domain owners.

How it works for Squarespace

  • Available as a referral partnership — simple integration, no heavy engineering lift.
  • Squarespace earns ~15% blended across the upfront broker fee and the domain sale revenue.
  • A differentiator most registrars don't offer: the ability to go after any domain, not just what's listed.
  • Increases customer satisfaction — customers who find their perfect domain stay and build on Squarespace.

Expired Domains is already live — the range reflects your trailing-12-month run rate of ~$5.0M in bookings. Reseller and Domain Broker Service are the new, incremental streams. These are conservative estimates; actual results vary based on domain mix and Squarespace's registrar volume. Afternic handles marketplace infrastructure, buyer demand, and transaction processing. Partners who commit across all three pillars receive enhanced commercial terms.

Next Steps

  1. 1 Align on partnership scope and commercial terms
  2. 2 Share technical integration requirements
  3. 3

Phase 1 — Begin with Fast Transfer reseller and expired domains

Fast Transfer is frictionless — the average domain delivers in under 5 minutes, with no manual steps or support load. Expired domains run passively through GoDaddy Auctions. Both unlock revenue with minimal engineering lift.

  4. 4

Phase 2 — Review expanding Afternic inventory beyond Fast Transfer, plus Domain Broker Service

Once Phase 1 is live and performing, evaluate adding non-Fast-Transfer premium inventory and launching DBS as a referral integration.

Squarespace Afternic

Appendix · Expired Domains lifecycle

Phase 1 · Days 0–20

Renewal grace

The original registrant can still renew. No action required from Squarespace or Afternic.

Phase 2 · Days 21–35

Loading → active auction

Day 21 the domain is loaded into GoDaddy Auctions — backend setup, not yet bidder-facing. Day 26 bidding opens for 10 days. Owner can still redeem through Day 30; Day 31 the domain moves into GoDaddy's holding account. Auction ends Day 35.

Phase 3 · Days 36–41

Closeout

If the auction ends without a winning bid, the domain enters a five-day closeout window at a flat buy-now price that decreases each day until it reaches $5.

Phase 4 · Days 42–43

Transfer

Fast Transfer ships the domain to the winning buyer.
